The Spokane International Film Festival started last night. I’m a little late in posting about it because I honestly wasn’t sure it was happening. Thankfully it’s not too late to still experience some of the awesome films that will be featured over the festival schedule (Jan 23-Feb 1). I don’t have much time to highlight as many films as I would like, but here’s a few I think are worth checking out. The rest of the schedule can be found on the website here. It’s very well set up to easily show off trailers, read bios and even get tickets in advance.

Best of the Northwest 2014
Friday, January 24, 2014 – 05:30 PM – The Bing Crosby Theater

Check out some great Northwest made short films including a few by our local friends and Collect Session-ers from the Spokane Film Project, Sean Finley and Shaun Springer.

Find Your Way
Saturday, January 25, 2014 – 2:15 PM – The Magic Lantern
Sunday, January 26, 2014 – 12:00 PM – The Magic Lantern

A fascinating documentary that follows 7 different musicians exploring their unique stories and experiences. The film is mostly set in Seattle, Washington. The film was funded through kickstarter and if you’ve spent much time in Pike’s Place Market you will probably recognize some of the buskers featured.

Broken Circle Breakdown
Friday, January 24, 2014 – 8:00 PM – The Bing Crosby Theater

Killer bluegrass soundtrack, a lifetime love story and great acting. This film seems like a definitive highlight of the festival. It’s received quite a bit of acclaim including an Academy Award nomination.

Transolar Galactica
Saturday, January 25, 2014 – 9:30 PM – The Garland Theater

Transolar Galactica started out as a web series and gained cult following quickly. Created by a an ambitious group of local Spokane filmmakers, this project has become quite an undertaking and an impressive feat. They successfully funded the continuation of the series via kickstarter bringing in over 30k (!!!!!), one of the most successful crowd funding campaigns in the area. We finally get an opportunity to see this work on the big screen and celebrate with the cast and crew. This is definitely an event to support and attend.

There’s tons of other amazing films on the list! Please do check the rest out and consider attending a few. This is a wonderful event bringing culture, diversity and creativity to Spokane.

On another note…I can’t post about SpIFF without expressing my disappointment that they chose to not bring back the Posterize part of the festival (something we thought was a design highlight of the whole year). It helped with the promotional/marketing side of things which this year has been pretty absent. Hopefully next year we can nag enough to get Posterize back.
