Pig Out. Well, there’s a lot of things that could be said about Pig Out. Great people watching, gluttony, deep fried everything, lots of music, those giant blocks of fries and the last very strong whiff of summer. It’s a must for the citizens of the Spokane area whether they love it or hate it and most people find themselves at this free event even just for a quick bite to eat.
But every year brings some mixed feelings as far as the music lineup goes. When you see some of the big name headliners and the sheer number of bands playing you know they are dishing out around $30k minimum for the booking budget at this now 6 day multiple stage festival. There’s usually a couple acts that stand out and several great local bands, but when you look through the calendar and see more than just a few acts that don’t even have press photos, decent recordings or more than 100 fans on facebook…well, it leaves a bit to be desired. And although the festival IS more about the food than the music, if you have that much money to throw around, shouldn’t you maximize it’s potential and attract people for the music as well? Are they consciously trying to keep young people away? Why the random up and coming acts intermixed with the classic rock cover bands? These questions we may continue to ask for years to come. But in the mean time, we can still enjoy a FREE 6 day outdoor food and music festival. Here’s a couple suggestions to choose from that should motivate you to head down to the park for Pig Out.
Wednesday | Dead Serious Lovers | 4pm
Dead Serious Lovers are one of the best Spokane bands probably ever. Talented, amazing songwriting, unique sound and two solid albums under their belts. If you aren’t an active fan/follower of them, please start being one.
Thursday | The Holy Broke | 12pm
The Holy Broke is Kent Ueland’s solo project. You know we already love him since we featured one of his new tunes in a Collect Session. We’re also looking forward to how this new project develops as we just caught wind of a full length album in the works.
Friday | Lake Street Dive | 9pm
Ok, I’ll try to keep from gushing too much, but this band is definitely in my top 20 favorite live bands I’ve ever seen. They are from New York city and have incredible talent, charm, and quite a unique genre mix of soul, jazz and R&B. I love them…and I think you will too. // Pictured above //
Friday | The Zombies | 9pm
Yes, the REAL Zombies…from the 60’s. They seem to still be able to put on a great show with the members that remain and in the past 6 years or so their early records regained some cred with young indie music connoisseurs. This will definitely be a favorite general pick of the whole festival.
Sunday | Kris Orlowski | 7pm
Kris Orlowski is out of Seattle and often brushes shoulders with other singer-songwriter favorites like Noah Gundersen and Allen Stone. His music maintains a significant Northwest signature but takes on it’s own unique form and style.
