KYRS is Spokane’s community radio station. They do some amazing work in the city and this year expanded that to an all day music festival down in Peaceful Valley. It was a fun day with lots of great music, food trucks, booths and sunshine. The stage was completely solar powered, the bands were treated incredibly well and overall everything was spectacular. The turnout seemed a little small but I think it was perfect example of how the community has been conditioned to view festivals in the area. Sandwiched right in between Elkfest and Pigout and then Terrain, all free music events, I know a lot of people were confused when they showed up and were asked to pay $20 to see a lineup of mostly local acts with a few regional headliners. Not that they shouldn’t be willing to pay, it’s just the reality of what new festivals are up against in this market.

This awesome promo video was put together by the folks at Purple Crayon, and Spark Spokane Media…also all connected with the Spokane Film Project and the 50 Hour Slam. These guys can’t be stopped. I don’t know what else they do besides make amazing videos for the community. We are a lucky town to have so much talent actively giving back. Check out their new podcast as well.
I love KYRS and often tune in to some of the music programming. One of the things that really supports a music scene’s infrastructure is it’s local radio efforts. I know the team there is going to work hard to make 2014’s KYRS fest even better and I am convinced their approach is on target. And maybe next year if KYRS is lucky enough to have PV resident, Eric Smith offer his services again…they won’t pass him up on that a second time.
